John White Alexander was born in 1856 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (city annexed to Pittsburgh in 1907). Orphaned at a very young age, he was raised by his grandparents. At age 12, John entered the world of work, he was young telegrapher in Pittsburgh, but his talent for drawing attracted the attention of one of his employers, who helped develop.
